Why blindside is different

On a tight urban site the excavation goes right to the property line, so there is no working space on the outside face of the wall. There is no second chance either: once the wall is poured, the membrane is permanently sandwiched between the concrete and the earth. It has to be installed correctly the first time, because it can never be inspected or repaired again.

What was involved

  • Membrane hung against the shoring and lagging before any steel or formwork went in.
  • Every lap, termination and penetration detailed and sealed by hand.
  • Protection maintained through rebar placement and the pour, so the membrane is not damaged by the trades following behind.
  • Full mechanical bond to the concrete, so water cannot migrate between membrane and wall.

Building to a property line? Blindside waterproofing has to be designed in early. Talk to us at the drawing stage, not after the pour.
